Hello, My name is Haley Lynn Ebbert and I'm six
years old. I was diagnosed with ALL (Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia) on January 12th, 2009.
This, is my story...
Background Story
On Thursday January 8th, 2009 I was enjoying free
time at my school LADYBIRD ACADEMY in Lake Mary, FL.
(they are wonderful). I was climbing up the ladder
when I felt a little pain behind my left knee that
didn't feel very good. The next day at school, I
wasn't really up for playing on the playground or
participating in any activities. My teachers were a
little worried about me so they told my mommy when
she picked me up from school.
My mommy thought she would ask daddy what he
thought we should do about the pain in my knee and
why it hurt me so much (I guess my daddy is a doctor
when all this time I thought he sold trash bags).
Anyway, I woke up on Saturday morning and my daddy
took me to the mall so I could see the dogs at the
pet store. Daddy also bought me pretty earrings so I
felt obligated to buy him lunch. I was having so
much fun with my daddy since I hadn't seen him in
three days because of his work. It was really hard
for me to walk on this day because the pain had
increased and traveled to the joints in my body.
Mommy and Daddy talked about my condition and
decided they would take me to an AFTER HOURS
PEDIATRIC doctor. She took pictures of my leg and
decided that I should probably see my doctor on
Monday morning.
On Monday January 12th, 2009 it would be a day
that everyone who knows me would never forget. Dr.
Benjamin, at CENTRAL FLORIDA PEDIATRICS, said I
needed to have my blood tested at SANFORD HOSPITAL.
After the blood work, my doctor called my mommy and
asked for her to please come by the office so she
could talk with us. When we arrived at the doctors
office, Dr Benjamin told my mommy and daddy she had
an idea of what was causing my pain and discomfort.
I remember my mommy, daddy, and Dr Benjamin crying
for a little bit. After that, my daddy picked me up
and carried me to the truck. I asked my mommy and
daddy, "are you crying because you love me?" My
daddy said, "more than you will ever know baby."
We arrived at ARNOLD PALMER HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN
in Orlando, FL on the night of January 12th, 2009.
The following day my mommy and daddy were told that
I was diagnosed with Pre B Cell ALL (Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia), which is a type of Leukemia
(cancer). It means the white blood cells in my bone
marrow are BAD and they're growing really fast not
making enough room for the good cells. There are
about 5,000 cases a year of ALL. Mommy and Daddy
keep telling everyone we have a long road ahead of
us, but I told them I will have my foot on the gas
the whole way. There will be bad days, but the
nurses and doctors at APH are the best in the whole
world. They promised they would take care of me.
Most of all, I have the support from family and
friends.
